1970s

  • Several Steel County Churches have food closets for needy members.


1978

  • Ecumenical Bloomington Prairie food pantry established and housed at First Lutheran.


1985

  • Steele County Emergency Food Shelf established at Church of Christ - Owatonna


1987

  • Ted Cochlin volunteers as Food Shelf Director at Church of Christ location.


1989

  • Demand for food outgrows food shelves resources.  First formal SCFS Board of Directors and process of incorporation started. 


1990

  • Steele County Food Shelf, Inc (SCFS) legally incorporated and achieved 501 (c) 3 status as a charitable organization.  Bloomington Prairie Ministerium coordinated with SCFS and moved their food pantry from First Lutheran to Bloomington Prairie community center.  Owatonna food shelf relocated to Riverland Building on 18th St. S.E.


1991

  • Ted Cochlin resigned as director and Lyn Rodgers became part time director.


1992

  • Ann Deetz become food shelf director.  SCFS expands hours of operation.


1993

  • Mary Beth Patterson hired as full time director.  Policies for eligibility, nutrition and food distribution were adopted.  


1995

  • Stormy Trom hired as full time director.  Lorraine Ferguson hired as director's assistant.


1996

  • SCFS centralized to Owatonna location.


1997

  • SCFS outgrew location.  Moved to Oakdale Mall and co-located with the Clothesline.


1998

  • SCFS  moved to present location with Clothesline.
