Holiday Train in Owatonna
The Canadian Pacific Railroad started a partnership with the National Food
Sharing System in 1999 as a way to raise awareness of the hunger issue. Ten
years later the partnership has collected $4 million and 2 million pounds of
food for food shelves across Canada and the
United States. Owatonna was privileged to be chosen as one of the stopping
places in 2009.
On December 7th at 4:45 p.m. the 1000- foot train rolled in to town decorated
in colorful lights. Two to three thousand people of all ages enjoyed the
anticipation and then the show as the train car opened with a cloud of pink
smoke and Santa appeared. He was accompanied by
a band playing “Santa Claus is coming to Town”, “Blue Christmas” and “Jingle
Bells”.
The Steele County Food Shelf benefited by receiving 1,634 pounds of food and $1,057.61 from the generous crowd attending. The Canadian Pacific Railroad also kindly donated $1000 to the Food Shelf.
Stormy Trom, Director of the Food Shelf, expressed appreciation for the support work from the Fire Chief, Mike Johnson, emergency reponse teams, Owatonna Bus Company, Todd Hale, Owatonna Peoples Press, KRFO Radio, KOWZ Radio, Ron Witt and American Rent-All, Lowes, Mayor Tom Kuntz and the Owatonna City Council, and the Owatonna Chamber of Commerce.
